In celebration of the Taos Summer of Love, 2009, during it's first event, Dennis Hopper was made Honorary Mayor of Taos.
Hopper directed and starred in Easy Rider, which was filmed in Taos. The Summer of Love marks the 40th anniversary of the film, which included scenes featuring Taos Pueblo, a local hot spring, and the interior of the jail where Billy and Wyatt (played by Dennis and Peter Fonda) famously meet up with George (played by Jack Nicholson.)
After completion of Easy Rider, Hopper moved to Taos, living in the former home of Mabel Dodge Luhan.
Easy Rider, which came in 88th in the American Film Institute's top 100 American Movies, was Hopper's attempt at capturing the American political climate at the time.
The 1967 Summer of Love in San Francisco was over, the '60s were drawing to a close, "and nobody's ever made a movie about it," Dennis said.
Other Taos Summer of Love events included dinner with Dennis Hopper at the opening of his silver gelatin print exhibition at the Harwood Museum, as well as photography of the Sixties at several Taos galleries.
